An allegedly drunken Riverhead driver sparked a three-car crash in Flanders on Saturday, Nov. 29, that sent five people to the hospital, including a woman who suffered serious injuries, police said.

Erik A. Yatvelasquez, 22, was driving a 2015 Jeep north on County Road 104 when he sideswiped a 2005 Chevrolet SUV, crossed the double yellow line and veered into an oncoming 2015 Lexus SUV, Southampton Town Police officials told the Riverhead News-Review on Monday.

A 60-year-old female passenger in the Lexus was rushed to Peconic Bay Medical Center with internal injuries, fractures and dislocations, according to police. She underwent multiple surgeries and has since been transferred to another area hospital for additional surgery, police added.

Mr. Yatvelasquez suffered “significant mouth injuries” and was airlifted by Suffolk County Police medevac to Stony Brook University Hospital, according to police.

He was charged with driving while intoxicated shortly after the crash, police said.

The driver of the Lexus and the two people in the Chevy were also taken to PBMC with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The passenger in Mr. Yatvelasquez’s car was not hurt in the crash.

After the initial 911 call at about 7:44 p.m. on Saturday, Southampton patrol units, the department’s Community Response Unit and New York State Police troopers responded to the crash, about a half-mile from the intersection with CR-105.

Ambulances from Flanders Northampton, Westhampton Beach and East Quogue also rushed to the scene, along with the Flanders Fire Department.

Both lanes of CR-104 were shut down between the traffic circle at CR-31 and CR-105. The road reopened shortly after midnight on Sunday, Nov. 30.

Detectives investigated the crash with the New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and Forensic Identification Unit.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Southampton Town Police detectives at 631-702-2230.

A 23-year-old Riverhead man died from serious injuries after colliding with another car in Southampton this weekend, according to a Southampton Town Police Department news release.

Patrol units responded to the motor vehicle collision on Flanders Road near Birch Creek Road in Flanders just before 3 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14. The two motor vehicles involved in the head-on collision sustained “catastrophic damage,” according to law enforcement.

Juan Camilo Alape-Penuela of Riverhead, who was driving a 2005 Grey Honda four-door sedan, was fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene. Two women passengers in the Honda suffered serious physical injuries. One was ejected from the vehicle, while the other was entrapped in the car.

Members of the Flanders Fire Department extricated the entrapped woman, and she was then flown by Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment. The other woman was transported by ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead.

The driver of the 2025 White Chevrolet Malibu sustained a head injury and was transported to PBMC for treatment.

Southampton Town police detectives responded to the scene, and received assistance from the Flanders Northampton Ambulance, Riverhead Town Ambulance, Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance and Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Westhampton Beach Village Police, New York State Police and Suffolk County Park Rangers.

The Southampton Town Police Department’s Drone Unit searched the road and marsh areas adjacent to Flanders Road near the collision site for any possible additional victims. The New York State Forensic Identification Unit aided with the investigation and accident scene crash reconstruction.

Flanders Road reopened at 9:45 a.m. after being closed for several hours between Longneck Boulevard in Flanders and Red Creek Road in Hampton Bays.

The incident is under active investigation by the Southampton Town Police Detective Division. Anyone with information on this incident is encouraged to call 631-702-2230 or 631-728-3400. For further information, contact Det. Sgt. Gina Laferrera at glaferrera@southamptontownny.gov.

Kenneth Myers of Lindenhurst, 55, has been arrested for alleged unlawful possession of illegal fireworks stored at Scott’s Pointe, according to a Riverhead Police Department press release.

The Riverhead Town Fire Marshal’s Office notified local police on July 15 around 10:55 a.m. about locating illegal fireworks inside Scott’s Pointe. Officers responded to the scene and found a quantity of fireworks in a sprinkler room.

All the illegal fireworks were confiscated and the Riverhead Police Crime Division commenced a further investigation. Mr. Myers was arrested after conference with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, processed and released for a future court date, the news release said.

The Riverhead Town Code states that “no person shall engage in or allow the manufacture, assembly, storage or display of any fireworks or pyrotechnics display without first obtaining a permit issued pursuant to this chapter. A completed application for display of fireworks or pyrotechnics display must be received by the Town Clerk a minimum of 30 days prior to the date of display.”

Those who violate fire prevention laws listed in the town code can face fines ranging from $250 to $2,500 and/or imprisonment of no more than 15 days.

The Riverhead Town Board approved a Fireworks Permit application from Island Water Park Corp. on July 1 to allow for the company to put on a fireworks show at Scott’s Pointe on July 5. At the time, it was noted the deadline for the permit was missed. However, the water park operator paid a $500 administrative fee to the fire marshal office, a $200 fireworks permit application fee and a $1,000 expedited fee.

This is a developing story.
