The Riverhead Town Police Department’s 42nd National Night Out celebration was all about uniting the community with Riverhead’s finest and forming bonds between the public and local police officers. It was also the first time the event has been held in the Town Square, across from The Suffolk.

Those who attended the family-friendly event enjoyed a free barbecue and ice cream, courtesy of Suffolk Federal Credit Union. Riverhead police officers took turns manning — and splashing in — the dunk tank, and other games like axe-throwing were a big hit.

There was also plenty of cool police equipment to get up close to — including police motorcycles, bikes, ATVs and a police boat — as well as Command Post, SWAT and dive equipment to see. In addition to drone demonstrations, K-9 officers Loki and Onyx showed off their skills with the help of their handlers, officers John Morris and Chris Burns.

And, of course, it would not be a Riverhead National Night Out without a visit from McGruff the Crime Dog, who gave out many high fives and hugs during the event.

“I say this all the time, and I mean it, and I truly believe that we have the best police department in Suffolk County and probably on Long Island,” said Riverhead Town Supervisor Tim Hubbard. “They’re dedicated, they have many family members here today, they’re local, their kids go to school with everybody’s kids. It’s a real nice community police department — under the leadership of Chief [Ed] Frost, we’ve really moved forward.”

As a light rain fell Friday morning, about 50 community members gathered at Riverhead’s annual Veterans Day ceremony to honor all those who served.

The ceremony, organized by the Riverhead Combined Veterans committee, was held at the lawn outside the Suffolk County Historical Society Museum where the granite World War I Memorial is located at the corner of West Main and Court streets.

As Riverhead’s VFW Post Commander Thomas Najdzion and others helped prepare for the ceremony, drivers passing by honked their horns in a show of support.

The ceremony began at 11 a.m. to coincide with the time of the signing of the agreement that ended World War I. Mr. Najdzion presided over the ceremony. John Newman led the prayer to begin the event. Following the National Anthem, Mr. Najdzion briefly spoke about the history of Veterans Day.

“We are assembled here today to pay tribute to the men and women of the community who have served the United States Armed Forces, our neighbors who have fought in defense of this country in preservation of our way of life,” Mr. Najdzion said. “Those men and women are worthy of far greater recognition than mere words, the sacrifices they made and deeds they performed shall be written in history and shall remain alive in our memories for generations to come.”

Members of the American Legion, VFW Post 2476, VFW Auxiliary and town supervisor Yvette Aguiar also addressed the audience.

“To the members of the Riverhead VFW and the American Legion who are participating in today’s event and this service, to all our soldiers across our nation and to our soldiers in Riverhead past and present, thank you for your service,” Ms. Aguiar said. “Because of your unselfish service to our country, we are here today. God bless America.”

Wreaths were presented and placed at the base of the World War I monument, which was followed by a traditional gun volley to end the ceremony.

The North Fork Breast Health Coalition held its 24th “5K Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness” Sunday morning at Tanger Outlet Center in Riverhead.

Amy Loeb, the executive director of Peconic Bay Medical Center, served as the emcee for the fundraising event.

“I am just thrilled to join you on this beautiful morning,” Ms. Loeb said as the participants prepared for a warm-up.

The annual event brings together breast cancer patients, survivors and thrivers, community members, local officials and leaders in the breast cancer community.

“Proceeds from the walk help pay for the free services we offer to breast cancer patients as well as our Lend A Helping Hand grant program,” said Melanie McEvoy Zuhoski, the NFBHC president. The helping hand program provides grants to patients on the North Fork who are being treated for breast cancer.

Some of the services the organization provides are gentle yoga, massage therapy, reflexology and support groups to breast-cancer patients and survivors.

The Riverhead Polish Independent Club held its second Polish Festival Saturday with traditional Polish music, food, drinks and more.

The celebration at Polish Hall on Marcy Avenue began outdoors in the afternoon and continued into the nighttime inside the hall.

Several famous people participated as well, including Hall of Fame baseball player and Southampton native Carl Yastrzemski, who was portrayed by Kevin Shea. Lisa Dabrowski, president of the Riverhead Polish Hall’s Ladies Auxiliary, served as the master of ceremonies.

Other characters at the festival included Lucyna Ćwierczakiewiczowa, played by Colette Gilbert, who was a noted writer and journalist from Poland and Nicolaus Copernicus, played by Ryan Janek Wolowski, who was mathematician and astronomer who lived from 1473-1543.

The Rich Bobinski Orchestra performed traditional tunes.

The event was organized for the first time last year after the traditional Polish Town Fair and Festival, hosted by the Polish Town Civic Association, was canceled. That festival was canceled again this summer for a third straight year and the association had said it plans to revive it for 2023.

A four-story residential building on East Main Street featuring 36 “luxury” apartments has officially opened in downtown Riverhead.

The building, dubbed “The Shipyard” by developer G2D Group, features studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments with a starting price of $2,500 per month.

The first tenants began to move in about a month ago and the developers held a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday to celebrate the opening. The building is currently at 50% capacity, according to Richard Piana, a spokesperson for G2D Group.

The Huntington-based developer is currently working on a second development at 205 Osborn Ave. that will feature another mixed-use building with 37 apartments. Among the amenities offered at the The Shipyard building are pet-friendly units, 24-hour video surveillance, “smart” key fob entry controlled from a resident’s mobile phone and a private parking lot, according to a press release from G2D Group.

Residents can request furnished or unfurnished rooms. The studio starts at $2,500 unfurnished. The one-bedroom units start at $2,700 and two-bedroom, one bathroom units start at $3,500. The two-bedroom and two-bathroom units start at $3,700.

Concierge services include cleaning, handyman and dog walking.

Each unit includes “high-quality interior finishes like slab stone backsplashes, quartz countertops, stainless steel professional-grade appliances, wine refrigerators, walk-in closets as well as in-unit washers and dryers and central air conditioning and heating,” according to the developer.

There are “minimalist details in each unit also, which include LED lighting, modern bathrooms with stall showers and soaking tubs.” Select units also have a private balcony with a view of Peconic River.

The property also has a spacious rooftop lounge, business center and private gym for residents. Tenants have access to the rooftop anytime to enjoy with friends and can also reserve it for private events.

Those interested can visit the sales office at 331 East Main St., call 631-315-9633, email info@g2dgroup.com or fill out the contact form at g2dgroup.com/portfolio/theshipyard/

The new apartment building replaced what had once been the site of a Subway restaurant.
